US-based consumer electronics corporation Best Buy has announced a recall of 5,100 replacement batteries for the MacBook Pro due to a risk of fire. The Consumer Product Safety Commission of the US said that there have been 13 reports from consumers that the batteries caught on fire.
In addition to that, one of the consumers suffered serious burns on their leg. The company is voluntarily recalling the black, as well as white ATG lithium ion replacement batteries for the notebook computers. The batteries in question were either sold online or shipped to consumers through its Geek Squad services, from September 2008 through June 2012, for a price of $50. The company said that it is now contacting its customers to ask them to return the batteries for a replacement or for a Best Buy Gift Card. Jeff Shelman, spokesperson for the company, said that Best Buy is just one of many retailers which also may have sold the batteries.
The black battery has a model number MC-MBOOK13B and MC-BOOK13W is on the label of the white battery. Both batteries have the ATG logo on them. The company also clarified that the original report wrongly stated that the batteries were a replacement unit for the MacBook Pro.
