Search engine giant Google said on March 19, 2013, that it will offer a high speed internet service in the city of Olathe, which is a Kansas City suburb. The city has about 125,000 residents and is the ideal location for the company to try out a new product.
The new plan by the search engine is the first step for Google Fiber, which is an internet and video service. This service will compete with local cable companies which are based outside Kansas City. The search engine had begun outfitting homes in Kansas City last year with the new service, however it will be a while before the target group receives complete connectivity.
On Tuesday, Google said that the Olathe city council has approved the proposal to roll out the internet service in the city. However, it is still not known exactly what date the service will be rolled out. Google said that it is poised to offer the high speed internet in other locations as well.
Rachel Hack, the Google Fibre Community Manager said, “Hopefully, this is the first of several announcements that we’ll be able to make about bringing Google Fiber to additional cities in the KC metro area; so stay tuned”. It was earlier reported that the search engine was planning to expand its Google Fibre Internet Service outside of Kansas City as well.
