Electronics manufacturer Toyota on September 26, 2012 showed off a new robotic friend which can be useful in terms of a helping hand. The new root can be useful around the house while it tries to fetch can carry for the elderly people or the ones who are immobile.

The new robot for the human support is a cylinder shaped machine which is 37 centimeters in diameter and is up to 130 cms tall. The device can be remote controlled with the help of a tablet computer to recognise items it is sent to fetch.

The Toyota engineers who designed the robot, took a clue from the dogs which are trained to retrieve things. The robot has been designed to perform simple tasks on command with the help of the arm which has a small suction pad.

Takashi Yamamoto the general manager at Toyota’s advanced technology engineering department said, “The robot still has challenges such as selecting items from a drawer containing all sorts of things, for example”. Takashi added, “Finding an item by itself before getting it to the person controlling it is the most difficult challenge”. Japan has a huge market for the products which are useful for the elderly people where the declining birth rate is creating a greying society.
