Micro blogging site Twitter has officially removed the ‘Favourite’ button. The button was used by the users to signal agreement, support, laughter, utter hatred and more. The company has said that it is replacing favourites with ‘likes’ which can be represented in its apps and on the web by red heart icons.
The changes will also be applied to Vine, owned by Twitter and is the latest effort by the company to simplify the user experience. Akarshan Kumar, the product manager at Twitter in a blog post said, “We want to make Twitter easier and more rewarding to use, and we know that at times the star could be confusing, especially to newcomers”.
Kumar added, “You might like a lot of things, but not everything can be your favorite.” The favourite button was initially designed to bookmark Tweets. But the feature seemed useless for a service that had messages that could be limited to just 140 characters and could not include photos or videos.
However, from the beginning, the developers were behind to make the feature more useful. The service had soon become popular among the users. That earlier version of the site attracted many of the loyal and influential users but has not helped much the advertisers.
