Samsung develops Wi-Fi technology that can provide data transmission speeds that are five times faster than what currently exists on consumer electronic devices. The South Korean electronics giant gave the news via an email statement.

The new 60GHz Wi-Fi will allow movies of 1 GB to be transferred between two devices within 3 seconds, while also facilitating the streaming of high-definition videos in real-time. The new technology developed breaks the barrier between actual and real speed.

Things like walls, trees and household appliances bring down the speed of actual Wi-Fi in most houses. If Samsung are to be believed, this is going to change very soon.

The highest speed currently available is 108 MP per second, but with the technology Samsung claims to have developed, that number could go up to 575 MB per second. That is approximately a 5 fold increase.

In the statement, Samsung said, “Unlike the existing 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi technologies, Samsung’s 802.11ad standard 60 GHz Wi-Fi technology maintains maximum speed by eliminating co-channel interference, regardless of the number of devices using the same network.

By eliminating speed reducing agents like walls and other obstacles, Samsung says they have resolved the problem that causes the difference in theoretical and actual speed.

The company aims to bring this technology to a number of products that would include audiovisual devices, telecommunication paraphernalia and medical equipment. The technology may be launched as early as 2015. This announcement comes amid dwindling sales of the company, owing to fierce competition from Apple and Chinese electronic companies.
