Cheap smartphone by Mozilla – the company best known for its Firefox browser.

Mozilla has launched a low-cost smartphone in India for Rs. 1999 ($33). The phone will be sold exclusively through Indian shopping website Snapdeal. The Intex Cloud FX will run Mozilla’s Firefox operating system, the first low-cost smartphone in Asia to be running the OS.

India has one of the fastest growing low-cost smartphone market in the world. Mozilla has collaborated with local indian IT company Intex to launch this smartphone.

“With the launch of Intex Cloud FX, we aim to enable the masses to get smartphone experience at the cost of a feature phone.” Mozilla said in a statement.

The handset supports several regional languages apart from English.

While Facebook and Twitter will be preloaded on the phone, WhatsApp will only be available through Third party Apps.

This is the first time a smartphone has breached the Rs. 2000 mark which is what the company believes will make it sell.

Keshav Bansal, Director Marketing said, “Our motto is to empower each and every Indian with the latest technology. We must understand that 70 per cent of Indian mobile phone users are still using feature phones and they aspire for a smartphone.”

With the introduction of such a cheap smartphone by Mozilla, more companies will look at India and other emerging markets to launch cheaper smartphones, which is good news for the users in these countries.
