The application Cover was founded by former employees of Google and it was launched on an invitation-only basis in October 2013. The app shows six applications on the Android lock screen which users are most likely going to use every day. This is based on daily analysis of the smartphone habits of users, as well as the current context. Before the high-profile acquisition, Cover managed to attract hundreds of thousands of users.

However, Cover and Twitter did not reveal much regarding how the app will be used by the micro-blogging site. The founders of Cover in a blog post said, “Twitter, like Cover, believes in the incredible potential of Android. They share our vision that smartphones can be a lot smarter — more useful and more contextual — and together we’re going to make that happen”.

The blog post went on to state that they are building upon a lot of what makes the application great and that they are thrilled to create something even better at Twitter. The micro-blogging site confirmed the deal in a tweet, but did not reveal further details of it.
