US-based company United Airlines will begin offering a new in-flight entertainment service which streams more than 150 movies, as well as almost 200 TV shows to its passengers who use iOS devices. The service will be provided to passengers free of charge.

At the beginning stages, the service will be limited to iOS devices and laptops, but the support for Android devices is expected to be launched sometime in the upcoming period. The hardware backbone of the service – which will be installed in the United’s Airbus A319, Airbus A320, Boeing 747-400 and certain 777-200 aircraft – will be able to stream content from an on-board media server over Wi-Fi.

By the end of 2014, the company is planning to feature the setup running in the majority of the domestic fleet. In order to use the Wi-Fi service on their flight, users have to first download the United Airlines iOS app, which will stream content over the United Wi-Fi. If users do not have the app, then they can do so for free while in the air.

The press release from the airline said that there will be two types of media available for consumption. The laptop users will have to install the browser plug-in, while the iOS device owners can watch the content through the United app.
