US-based tech giant Apple is all set to open its latest plant in Mesa, Arizona. The new plant will help in creating about 2,000 jobs to produce components for its products. The recent move has been made by the company in order to improve manufacturing in the United States.
The iPhone manufacturing giant made a deal with GT Advanced Technologies Inc. and the California-based company will pay GT Advances Technologies $578 million to supply equipment for the upcoming facility. Reports say that the machines make materials out of sapphire, which is used in the manufacturing of smartphones, in order to cover home buttons and camera lenses.
For many years, the iPad manufacturer has been outsourcing the majority of its manufacturing to Asian suppliers like Foxconn Technology Group and even faced criticism from labor groups and politicians for such practice. Kristin Huguet, the spokesperson for Apple said, “We are proud to expand our domestic manufacturing initiative with a new facility in Arizona, creating more than 2,000 jobs in engineering, manufacturing and construction”.
The spokesperson went on to say that the new plant will make components for Apple products and will run on 100 percent renewable energy from the first day. So far, Apple has not specified which products will be manufactured at the new plant.
