Social networking giant Facebook went down for a whole 12 minutes on February 24, 2015. Several users and reports mentioned about the blackout and this led to a panic like situation among the users. Several users flocked to the micro blogging site Twitter to express their shock and grief. The error page fn Facebook had an automated message which said that the site was working on the issue and that it would be fixed as soon as possible.
The hashtag # Facebook started trending as soon as the site went down. Many also started posting funny messages about the issue. One of the posts read, “Facebook was down earlier so I spent some time with my family, they seem like nice people”. Even the Facebook’s ‘Platform Status’ page was facing issues.
The page is used to communicate when the actual site is down. Outages were reported in Australia, India, North America and Europe. Facebook denied reports that they were hacked and said that the outage was due to a change that affected their configuration systems. During the month of September, 2014 Facebook had 1.25 billion active users.
During the outage, Chief Executive of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg was at an event by Oculus, the virtual reality headset company Facebook owns.
