On August 20, 2013, the CEO of the social networking giant Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg announced on his official Facebook profile the formation of a partnership with some of the biggest technology companies in the world, including Samsung, Nokia, Qualcomm and others to make Internet access available to all people on Earth.
Internet.Org is a group that intends to make the Internet connection an option for the 5 billion people who do not have it at the moment. Reports have stated that just 2.7 billion of the world’s population have Internet access. Zuckerberg said, “Everything Facebook has done has been about giving all people around the world the power to connect”.
The CEO went on to say that there are huge barriers in developing countries in connecting and joining the knowledge economy. The Internet.org will become a global partnership which will work on overcoming such challenges, which include making Internet access available to those who cannot afford it for the time being.
Zuckerberg said that the founding members of Internet.org include MediaTek, Ericsson and Opera, who will come together and develop joint projects, mobilize the industry and share knowledge in order to bring the world online.
