Photo-sharing service Instagram is now accessible from desktops and laptops and not only phones. According to Kevin System, who is the CEO of the company, accessibility was the key idea behind the company’s move to take the service to the desktop web. Now users will be able to see profiles directly on Instagram.com. The social networking site had started working on bringing the service to desktops at the end of 2012 and as of February 5, 2013, it is available as a fully-fledged website.
Users can view entire feeds from their desktop, just as they would on their phones. The earlier introduction of web profiles in December 2012, only allowed one to see popular images. Pictures can be ‘liked’ and commented on from a desktop or laptop as well. However, photographs can only be uploaded via mobile phones and by no other means.
Many people have started to see comparisons between social networking site Facebook and Instagram, now that the former has acquired the photo-sharing site. Facebook bought Instagram for USD 1 billion in April 2012, in a bid to extend its dominance on the social networking playground.
With the new changes, it appears as through Instagram is being influenced by Facebook’s desktop popularity and the reverse is happening for the social networking site in terms of the mobile world.
