For the first time Samsung’s Galaxy S III handset has outsold Apple’s iPhone 4S. The Samsung handset has now become the world’s best selling smartphone.

The South Korean tech company has sold 18 million models of the Galaxy S III as compared to 16.2 million units of the iPhone 4S in the third quarter of 2012. Neil Mawston from Strategic Analysis said that the Galaxy S III has proven wildly popular with consumers and operators, but Apple’s new iPhone 5 is expected to reclaim the top position in terms of sales soon.

According to analysts, the reason the Galaxy S III was able to get pole position ahead of the iPhone 4, was that many customers are still waiting for the iPhone 5 to be launched.
