Amazon Web Services launches Glacier storage service

A low cost storage service has been launched by Amazon Web services known as the Glacier. The company on August 20, 2012 said that the new service has been customized for data archiving and backup.

The areas which suit for the Glacier include media archives, financial healthcare records, long-term database backups , raw genomic sequence data, health care records and information which has been retained for regulatory compliance. The data storage in Glacier costs from US$0.01 per gigabyte per month, while the comparison costs from between $0.125 and $0.055 per gugabyte per month or standard storage. But to get the lowest prices, data volumes above 5,000 terabyte are needed.
